NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Public to Share Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has rolled out a fresh digital platform asking citizens to provide images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This step comes just a shortly after a major immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained In Enforcement Action
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a announcement.
"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement during the raid, I encourage you to provide that evidence with us. We are pledged to assessing these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The form provides fields to upload photos and videos of the operation, plus a field to note location information. Prior to sending, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a court case or official statement."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which onlookers say included more than 50 ICE personnel, happened in a popular neighborhood of the city where fake products and additional items are regularly available en masse – typically to sightseers.
Videos of Tuesday's raid show multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of residents pursued the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed traveling down the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
During a news conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He said the persons were released on the following day with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a militarized effort to incite tension. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates denounced the incident, along with NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration selects oppressive displays that instill panic, instead of protection. It has to end," a contender declared.
NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and everything to do with frightening communities and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
ICE policy forbids the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it does not apprehend citizens. However, external research has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in NY and around the country recently.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Protests against immigration enforcement are ubiquitous along with allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Recently, a submission filed by legal entities claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
