Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
