McLaren's Lando Norris Wins First Formula One World Championship in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Grand Prix Victory.

In a display of nerveless racing, the McLaren driver has won his debut Formula One world championship by taking P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Third place was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, despite the fact that his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Norris closed out his success with clinical focus to win the championship that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the previous two rounds. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge unimpeded was crucial to his title fight.

Contrasting Fates

While Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will aim to reset over the off-season.
