Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
