Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
