Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Message That Provoked the Dispute

The clip, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in defense or intelligence positions.

"As we did, you all took an oath to defend and uphold this constitution," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that contravene the statutes or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry response from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he declared: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Respond

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined declaration condemning the statements.

"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our United States with great national pride and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement added.

Representatives' Firm Response

The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a response.

"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this nation and made an vow to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred duty."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it punishable by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and duty to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."

Further Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of public representatives."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."

The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative stated. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the executive's legal commands."

She added: "The purity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
