California's Governor Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he emphasized that any choice is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
He has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from critics.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and suggested revoking the authority to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160m from California," he stated, in the wake of a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.
Duffy had earlier stated he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a previous comment addressing the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A this month's study found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has grown to an average of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while traveling several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the voters."
