Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
