A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
